The
Learning Lab is supported by a group of
over 50 dedicated volunteers who work
directly with adults or children ages
0-6 as tutors or provide clerical and
special events assistance.

PRESCHOOL
or INFANT/TODDLER CLASSROOM VOLUNTEER
Preschool volunteers
will assist the Preschool Educator with
12-14 three to six year old children
enrolled in Preschoolers & Parents
as Partners class and will participate
in all classroom activities with staff,
children and parents.
Infant/Toddler
volunteers will assist the
Infant/Toddler educator with 3-6 zero to
three year old children and will
participate in all classroom activities.
Responsibilities
Managing
 | Record changes in
the emotional, social, physical or
cognitive skills of the children |
 | Maintain students’
and families’ privacy |
 | Maintain an
accurate accounting of volunteer
hours |
 | Facilitate, model
and mentor |
 | Enhance children’s
learning through play |
 | Promote
literacy skills through reading,
writing and conversation |
 | Enhance family
learning and promote healthy family
relationships, emphasizing positive
interaction and learning techniques |
Helping
 | Volunteers may
choose to help with the preparation
of classroom materials and/or
activities, filing, copying, or
material check-in. |
Time Commitment
 | Volunteers will
have three hours of
initial training with occasional
reading. |
 | Volunteers will be
assigned to a specific day and class
time. Preschoolers & Parents as
Partners Family Literacy classes run during
the day only and are 2.5 hours in
duration. |
Qualifications
 | Must be 18 years or
older or have approval of Education
Director if under age 18 |
 | Enjoy hands-on play
with preschool-age children or
infants and toddlers |
 | Feel comfortable in
a mentoring role with parents |
SHORT
TERM PROJECTS
We have a continual
need for help making preschool classroom
materials, organizing lending materials
and clerical assistance such as data
entry, bulk mailing preparation and
assistance for special events. This type
of assistance can be one-time or ongoing
according to an individual’s schedule.

ADULT
VOLUNTEER TUTOR
Tutors assist the
Adult Educator with 12-14 adult students
enrolled in Adult Basic Skills, English
Language Learners or Preschoolers
& Parents as Partners class.
Responsibilities
Managing
 | Keep records of
students’ activities in class |
 | Maintain students’
privacy |
Observing
 | Monitor student
progress in class |
 | Diagnose, tutor,
and coach |
 | Provide remediation
and enhancement of computer
curricula to individuals or small
groups of students |
Guiding & Helping
 | Follow Learning
Lab curricula |
Time Commitment
 | Approximately 8
hours of training consisting of four
2-hour workshops |
 | 2-2.5 hours of
tutoring per week after training (Volunteer tutors are assigned to a
specific class day and time) |
 | 6 month minimum
tutoring commitment |
Qualifications
 | High school diploma |
 | Enthusiasm for
teaching |
 | Ability to use or
learn to use the computer |
