Learning Lab Success Stories

-Shayla's Story

Shayla is a 22 year old mother of three who now believes she can finish her GED and go beyond.  Shayla comes to class with her almost 2 year old daughter and her 4 month old son.  Before Learning Lab, school made her “feel stupid, on the spot.”  At Learning Lab she found respect for her abilities and increasingly believes in her capabilities.  “Before I came here my confidence was very low, but now I feel that the sky is my limit. When I first came here my grade level was pretty low, but I have noticed a big change in my understanding and creative thinking.”  Shayla has also increased confidence in herself as a parent.  She does more educational activities with her kids, understands more about child development, particularly brain development in her infant, and is confident that she can help her young children learn.  She recently bought her first home, works part-time and is a dedicated student.
Shayla worked hard to improve her reading skills by two grade levels and passed the GED reading test in the spring of 2009.  She is currently studying for social studies and math GED tests.

-Josh's Story

Josh is a 39 year old single father.  He attended Learning Lab classes to prepare for the GED test.  Here’s his story in his own words.
“School to me was where I went to socialize with my friends, get the info on a good party, and play sports.  I always had a summer job and I liked making money way more than I liked school.  I felt by the time I was old enough to drop out I could learn a trade and have a good future.  I became a welder.
It’s been 21 years since I left school and I have come to a crossroads in my life.  Now I realize my limited education has kept me from pursuing my dreams.  So I am in Learning Lab classes to correct the biggest mistake of my life; dropping out of school.  I feel I’m on the road to breaking the bonds that have narrowed my career choices.  I can have a fulfilling life with limitless possibilities.”
Josh received his high school equivalency in August.  Currently he is enrolled in an EMT training program which is the career he has always dreamed of pursuing.
